Our  Mission Statement

-The Compass Point of what we ultimately do as a church -

A&M United Methodist Church invites and equips followers of Jesus Christ.

 Our Vision Statement

A picture of our desired future -

A&M UMC seeks to be a Christ-centered church made up of highly committed members worshiping God, growing as disciples, and serving others through the gifts God has given us.  We affirm our heritage to minister to and with the university community.  We seek to be a church that invests in the lives of persons outside of a Christ-centered congregation, inviting others to experience the wonder of God and the journey of discipleship.  We desire to share the message of Christ through compassion, conviction, conversion, and community.  We dream of being a church that makes a transforming difference in the lives of our members, our community, and our world.

The Story of the 5 I’s

Once upon a time there was a child whose family had just moved into a neighborhood.  One day, a neighbor came over and presented the child with a baseball glove.

“What’s this for?” the child asked.

“Consider it an investment,” the neighbor responded.  The next day the neighbor came over and invited the child to play ball with the other neighbors.  The child knew little about baseball, but responded positively to the invitation.

Soon the child was on a freshly mown lawn playing ball and feeling quite included.  Within a short time the child got involved with other neighborhood children, planning games with other teams and developing a game plan.  Naturally, the next step was to discover what each child was best at doing.  Some were really good pitchers while others played well in the field.  Eventually, all the children discovered their gifts and implemented them for the good of the team.

Then one day a new child moved into the neighborhood.  Shortly thereafter, a smiling child knocked on the new neighbor’s door holding out a baseball glove as a gift.

“What’s this for?” asked the neighbor.

“Consider it an investment,” the child responded, remembering words heard from another neighbor not so long before.

Wouldn’t it be great if all stories went like that?  What if neighbors invested in your life and invited you to play with them?  It feels great to be included in the game and involved in the planning.  It is fulfilling to have abilities implemented for the good of the team.  It is exciting then to turn around and invest in the lives of others.  This is the strategy of ministry at A&M United Methodist Church.  It is our sincere hope that every member of this great church will have your own story to tell—a story of 5 I’s: Invest, Invite, Include, Involve, Implement, and Invest again in others.

THE 5 I’S
Our Strategy for Ministry

Invest – Develop authentic relationships with persons not connected to a Christ-centered congregation.

Invite – Extend an invitation to someone not a part of a Christ-centered congregation to experience A&M UMC.

Include – Participate in inspiring congregational worship experiences.

Involve – Join a faith-forming small group.

Implement – Discover, develop, and deploy our spiritual and financial gifts in ministry.

Invest – Return the investment by investing in the lives of others.

Core Values

Character values to which we are committed as a faith community-

CompassionWhen asked what was the most important commandment, Jesus was clear that it was loving God and loving neighbor.  When asked who one’s neighbor was, Jesus told a story in Luke 10 of a man who showed mercy to another.  “Go and do likewise,” Jesus said.  The first call on our lives is to express compassion as Christ did.

Conviction  The call of Christ on our lives is a call to the life that

he desires for us.  This is the Old Testament concept of
mitzvah, typically translated “commandment,” but  perhaps best translated, “divine expectation.” We seek to explore, express, and experience these expectations in our lives.

Conversion God loves us right where we are, but loves us too

much to leave us there.  Jesus calls us to follow him, to grow in love, to strive toward perfection.  This requires conversion – change, which we constantly seek.

                       What we Believe

God
The one, true, omnipotent God, Creator of all things, who
exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Bible The Bible, the divinely inspired writings which reveal the Word of God: the supreme, authoritative standard for faith and practice, to be received by the community of faith through the Holy Spirit as the sure guide to a right relationship with the Lord and effective discipleship.

Human Worth The value and dignity of all people who, though created in God’s image to live in joy and holiness, are separated from God and each other by sin and brokenness.

Jesus Christ Jesus, fully human and fully divine, who lived without sin as a perfect example, assumed the judgment due sinners by dying on the cross in our place, was raised from the dead, ascended to the heavenly Father, and offers salvation to all who repent and put their faith in Him as Lord of their lives.

Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence and transforming power of God, who gives to all believers a new life, abundant and eternal, and equips us with spiritual gifts for our God-designed purpose of obedient discipleship and holy living.

Church The unity of all who honor Jesus as Lord in the church: the Church manifesting the faith passed down from the first Apostles through worship, prayer, teaching of the Word, observance of the sacraments, fellowship, service, witness, and sacrificial outreach to others throughout the world.

Grace – Our Core Belief

Prevenient Grace Grace before you know it: the divine love that surrounds all humanity and precedes any and all of our conscious impulses.

Justifying Grace Grace that puts us right: God reaches out to the repentant believer in justifying grace with accepting and pardoning love.  In justification, we are, through faith, forgiven our sin and restored to God’s favor.

Sanctifying Grace Grace that pulls us forward: We hold that the wonder of God’s acceptance and pardon does not end God’s saving work, but that God continues to nurture our growth in grace.

Final Victory The future return and ultimate reign of Jesus Christ, who will judge all people with justice and mercy and honor the choices we have made.
