The first organization
of the women of the A&M United Methodist Church was founded in
1921 as Circle V of the Bryan Auxiliary. On November 6, 1922, the
group became independent and was known as the Missionary Society
with a total membership of 22. In September of 1940, the name was
changed to the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service had 27 charter
members. Enrollment increased to 133 by 1968. The 25th Anniversary
was observed with a Silver Anniversary tea at the YMCA, October
11, 1964. The Texas Conference Annual Meeting was held in the A&M
United Methodist Church on March 13-15, 1968.
In 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical
United Brethren Church merged forming the United Methodist Church.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service and the Evangelical
United Brethren Women's Society of World Service combined forming
the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
In the spring of 1970, the merger of the Gulf Coast Conference
with the Texas Conference was accomplished. The new enlarged Bryan
District organizational meeting was held at Bryan First United
Methodist Church on June 14, 1970. Ninety-nine names were placed
on the charter of the A&M United Methodist Woman's Society of
Christian Service.
In April 1972, the General Conference approved a new
organization name known as the United Methodist Women, which
replaced the Women's Societies and Wesleyan Service Guilds, to
become effective on January 1, 1974.
The Texas Conference Day of Celebration of United
Methodist Women was held in Lufkin on November 17, 1973. The Bryan
District Day of Celebration of United Methodist Women was held in
the A&M United Methodist Church on December 2, 1973.
January 15, 1974 was the date of the Service of
Celebration and signing of the Charter in the A&M United Methodist
Women unit.
