- In an atmosphere
of warm hospitality we encourage people to ask questions about life and
faith. We help them deal with difficulties and misconceptions. It is
focused on people, not a preconceived curriculum. (Inquiry phase)
- We use a selection
of New Testament scriptures to journey to Jesus and grow towards
Christian maturity. (Formation phase)
- People learn
spiritual wisdom through worship. We also journey with Jesus as we grow
in personal prayer and Bible reflection. (Candidacy phase)
- People discover
their gifts and find their ministries. (Integration phase)
“Journey to Christ”
is not a
Bible study (although we do reflect on a passage of scripture each week).
It is more. It is engaging in the basic practices that we believe will
help one experience the fullness of who Jesus is and how he invites us to live.
It is purposely practicing the basic “means of grace”: prayer, scripture study,
worship, and service to others.
Just as those disciples
walked to the village of Emmaus at their own pace that Easter long ago,
Seekers are under no pressure to reach any particular decision or take any
particular action. They are simply encouraged to let Jesus’ presence walk
with them and lead them to whatever conclusion is right for them.
For
Seekers whose Journey to Christ moves them to choose Christian
discipleship as a life style, we offer the option of Christian baptism.
For those Seekers who have already been baptized, we offer the option to
renew their baptismal vows. We believe that all who choose this Journey
with Christ will find real nourishment for their spiritual life.
What do we do in Journey to Christ?
-
Hear a brief faith story
-
Reflect on a section of scripture in small groups of 6 or 7 persons
-
Discuss implications for discipleship that grow out of the scripture and
relate them to major United Methodist beliefs.
During the week we
...
-
Pause a few minutes each day to meditate on scripture and pray
-
Provide Seeker-Sponsor contact for encouragement and accountability
-
Engage in service opportunities helping suffering and needy persons (at
least one project during the semester)
